Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu assumed the role as Chief Executive Officer/ National Coordinator of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on the 15th of August 2016. He is an Infectious Disease Epidemiologist and Consultant in Public Health Medicine.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Ihekweazu was the Managing Partner at EpiAfric, a health consultancy firm. He worked previously as co-Director of the Centre for Tuberculosis at the South African National Institute for Communicable Diseases, Johannesburg, South Africa, a Consultant Medical Epidemiologist with the UK's Health Protection Agency, and at Germany’s Robert Koch Institute.

Dr. Ihekweazu has had several Consultancy roles with the World Health Organization, in response to major outbreaks and supporting the design of surveillance systems in Geneva, Sudan, Liberia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland, Turkey and Nigeria.

His scientific research has been focused largely on intervention epidemiology. Dr. Ihekweazu also currently serves on the board of Society for Family Health, Education as a Vaccine, Public Health Foundation of Nigeria, and on the Africa Policy Advisory Board of ONE.
